It has been an uncharacteristically warm winter this year and the past few weeks of temperatures in the 50's left us wondering if we could start fishing a bit earlier than usual. Now everyone is a little anxious for the season to get under way, mainly because of one particular event from this past Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day happens to be my brother Mike's birthday and he received a new tackle box from my mom. Much to my dismay, this wasn't an ordinary tackle box. It's about twice the size of a piece of carry-on luggage with more zippers and pockets than Michael Jackson's red Thriller jacket. Jim and I are naturally feeling a bit threatened but insist on our theory that it's a poor carpenter that blames his tools. I had Mike put both of the tackle boxes together on this trip so that you can get a feel for what i'm talking about.
We thought about going to Maskill Mill Pond to stay out of the wind but decided on Union Lake instead. I didn't have my hopes set to high and figured on catching a few Pickeral or something being that it's still early in the season. We started off from the west side boat ramp and decided to work around the islands near the boat ramp so that we could stay out of the wind. Mike was using a swim bait and a rattle trap, and I was using a Rapala. We were in about 3-4 feet of water working against the bank of the islands with no luck. We then started in the grass between the islands and the main shoreline (about 2.5feet deep) and landed 4 decent bass, one of them a 3.24 pounder. None of the bass hit very hard at all and I actually thought I was hung up on weeds a couple of times and wound up with a fish on the other end.
We then made our way up the side towards the dam and fished some of the deeper 18-20ft water. There were several fish on the finder but we couldn't get anything to bite. Supposedly there's smallies up near the dam but we really don't know how to catch them and we've never had much luck up front. We went across the front of the lake and tucked in behind a tree line in some pretty shallow water (~ 1.5-2 feet). Mike landed a small bass on his swim bait. We worked our way about half way down the other side past all of the mooring booeys and then started getting a little low on battery. It sure would be nice to have a 9.9hp with this lake.. It's very big and slow going with a trolling motor. Plus we were fighting the wind the whole time. Here's a few pics and videos from the trip. Enjoy:
